This is the thing. Panic attacks and anxiety might reflect a deeper ‘issue’ such as an unhealthy, detached, intellectual relationship with your feelings. There’s no point in coping with panic attacks and anxiety, or “fixing the event”, or knowing a few techniques to calm yourself down “in the moment”, if you keep putting yourself in the same situation and you’re back to square one. A much more strategic and smarter way to go about this is to refuse to fix the event/ symptom /[insert feeling that you want to fix now] and really ask yourself “what has gotten me here in the first place?”.
Very often, what I see among my students is that a panic attack and anxiety might simply be the culmination of the habit of avoiding your feelings, habit which in turn might be driven simply by ignorance, or from the belief that your feelings are not good enough, that if people will find out who you really are they’ll abandon you, repressing real feelings and pleasing not be perceived as a bad person, etc. THAT is the real problem, solve THAT! So now when you have a very stressful situation in your life or strong emotions that you weren’t used to, instead of feeling them fully, your mind just goes in panic because it can’t handle the intensity and nuances of all these feelings, so now you have panic and anxiety AS A RESULT (not as the real problem!). What’s the point of fixing the event/feeling/symptom if your “emotional default” remains the same?Anxiety/panic is the culmination of an habit, a result of something else, a fallback reaction, not the real problem.
This is your life, take this seriously and stop avoiding shit. Do yourself and your loved ones a favor: Stop obsessing on the symptom/fixing the event/coping and just solve the real problem and strengthen your being once and for all so you don’t have to cope with this stuff and find yourself in the same situation year after year in the first place.
